The West Point dig in Seattle in the early 90s. This was an interesting site in that it provided important data about the area dating back to ca. 4000 before present. There was a timetable regarding this project, as it was directly in the way of the big pipe, metaphorically allowing Seattleites to flush. The site was below sea level, as it was buried a few hundred years ago during the last major earthquake & accompanying tsunami, the level of the site subsiding at the time. We had to keep the pumps going or risk walking in goo.

This is the view from “Cannonball Island” looking back at the portion of the Ozette Village site excavated in the 70s and early 80s. Kirk and Dougherty’s Hunters of the Whale is a good introduction to the archaeology of the site. A common activity after work at the site was playing volleyball on the beach (at the right side of the photo).

a medium sized labret (lip plug) from the West Point dig in Seattle. This dates from ca. 4000 BP to 2600 BP and likely was worn by a young to middle aged woman. These were a status symbol, as one had to have it inserted at a potlatch where "anyone who was anyone" was in attendance, and it might take years to save up enough wealth to throw the potlatch. This one has slight wear markings from the woman's teeth on the inside surface.
